University of Vienna moves further up the rankings

Advancement to the top 100 in the World Reputation Rankings 2023 - 2nd place for internationality in German-speaking countries in an evaluation by "THE Student"

The University made it into the top 100 in 22 subjects in the QS Subject Ranking (April 2024)

The University of Vienna performed very well in the latest subject ranking published by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). A highlight is 10th place worldwide for the subject Communication out of 250 universities. Overall, the University of Vienna made it into the top 100 in 22 subjects in the QS Subject Ranking, which is three more than last year. The University of Vienna moved up into the top 100 in the subjects of Law, Agriculture & Forestry and Psychology. In 8 subject rankings, the University of Vienna was even able to place itself in the top 50 of the respective subject: Communication in 10th place (out of 250, top 4%), Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies in 21st place (out of 140, top 15%), History in 33rd place (out of 230, top 14%), Archeology in 35th place (out of 240, top 15%), Classics & Ancient History in 40th place (out of 100, top 40%), Anthropology in 43rd place (out of 150, top 29%), Linguistics in 46th place (out of 320, top 14%) and Philosophy in 49th place (out of 210, top 23%).

World Reputation Rankings 2023: Advancement into the top 100

In the current ranking, the University of Vienna is now ranked #91-100 out of a total of 204 universities. This means that the University of Vienna has moved up from its previous position of #101-125. 

This ranking is based on the reputation indicators of THE World University Rankings.

Internationality: 2nd place in the German-speaking area for the University of Vienna (THE Student ranking, January 2024)

  • Place 11 among 203 universities worldwide
  • Place 2 among universities in the German-speaking area (only behind ETH Zurich)

This analysis on the internationality of universities was based on the relevant indicators of the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2024. The analysis examined the share of international students and teachers as well as the share of publications with international co-authors.

University of Vienna achieves excellent results in all major rankings

In 2023, the University of Vienna was able to significantly improve in all three higher education rankings (THE, QS, Shanghai) assessing entire universities, which are, due to their international visibility, the most important ones. 

Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects: University of Vienna in 3rd place worldwide in Communication Science (October 2023)

  • Communication Science: 3rd place (among 300 universities ranked) and improvement from 7th place in 2022
  • Physics: significant improvement from 301st-400th place in 2022 to 48th place in 2023 (among 500 universities ranked)
  • Mathematics: 34th place as well as Political Science: 50th place (among 500 universities in each category)

Position 119: University of Vienna continues to advance in the THE ranking (September 2023)

  • 119th place among 1,900 universities worldwide
  • Moves up from 124th place in the previous year
  • Positive trend: improvement in the ranking two times in a row
