Sebastian Schütze was reappointed Rector of the University of Vienna

The University Board of the University of Vienna has reappointed Sebastian Schütze as Rector of the University of Vienna in today’s meeting. Already at its extraordinary meeting on 20 March 2025, the Senate of the University of Vienna has agreed to the reappointment of Sebastian Schütze as Rector for the term of office from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2030. Sebastian Schütze has been Rector of the University of Vienna since 1 October 2022.

Elisabeth Lovrek, Chair of the University Board of the University of Vienna emphasised, "We are happy that Sebastian Schütze will continue his work as an outstanding leader managing our University. Especially in these times which are challenging for academic research and universities worldwide, this reappointment by the Senate and University Board is an important signal of unity."

On the occasion of his reappointment, Rector Sebastian Schütze explained, "I want to continue the University’s successful course in excellent research and internationalisation. What I find especially important in this regard is the role of the University as Austria’s most important academic educational institution and its societal contribution to the major issues of the future, ranging from digital transformation, health, climate and environment to migration, mobility, the concept of democracy and political education."

The University Board is convinced that Sebastian Schütze will continue the successful path of the University of Vienna and professionally master the current and future challenges.

About Sebastian Schütze

Following important academic positions at the Freie Universität Berlin, the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome and the Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, Sebastian Schütze has been Professor of Modern Art History at the University of Vienna since 2009, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Historical and Culture Studies from 2018 until 2022, and Rector of the University since October 2022.  He is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on Italy’s art history and cultural history, the history of collections in Vienna and Central Europe as well as the productive interactions between literature and visual arts. A matter of particular concern is making his research findings accessible for a larger audience, also in international exhibitions.
