University of Vienna Renews Cooperation with ELI

The University of Vienna and the European Law Institute (ELI) have extended their cooperation until 2019. Both partners look forward to another four years of successful collaboration. The aim of the ELI is to contribute to the development of all areas of European law, including civil, criminal and administrative law. Hosting the ELI Secretariat in Vienna ensures that the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna will continue to participate actively in the development of European law, and that the international presence of the University of Vienna will further increase.

In 2011, the University of Vienna won in its bid to host the ELI Secretariat; among the other Europe-wide competitors were the European University Institute in Florence and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. In the same year, the ELI Secretariat was opened by Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission at that time. Since then, the ELI, which is partly modelled on the American Law Institute (ALI), has developed into an internationally renowned institution that collaborates closely with other international organisations and EU institutions.

Academics of the University of Vienna routinely participate in many different ELI projects. A prime example is the project on the Common European Sales Law (CESL), in which Prof. Christiane Wendehorst from the Department of Civil Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna was involved in a leading position. This project, which was chaired by Lord Thomas, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, produced a much noticed statement that was received very positively by the EU institutions and decisively shaped the European Parliament Resolution of February 2014.

ELI’s Annual Conference will again take place in Vienna from 2-4 September 2015. As usual, the event will gather experts from all over Europe and beyond. Věra Jourová, the new EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, and Harriet Lansing, the President of the American Uniform Law Commission, will each deliver a keynote speech.
